Radialenes are a unique class of unsaturated hydrocarbons and have attracted much attention from the viewpoint of their electronic structures of cross-π–electron-conjugation. On the other hand, there has been much interest in the chemistry of P=C double-bond compounds because of their unique electronic characters. Therefore, we became interested in the chemistry of a triphospha[3]radialene, where the three exo-carbon atoms of a [3]radialene skeleton are replaced by phosphorus atoms. The first stable 4,5,6-triphospha[3]radialene 3 was successfully synthesized from tetrachlorocyclopropene 1 via phosphatriafulvene 2. It was revealed that triphospha[3]radialene 3 exhibits red-shifted absorption and high electron-accepting ability reflecting unique phosphorus-containing cross-conjugated skeleton.
